Imagining yourself as someone else

This is definitely a way of acting differently, and hoping that your mind will follow!

I had a patient once who was very lacking in confidence and self-esteem. But when we were talking one day, he told me how much he liked cricket, and how his great hero was David Gower. Now, these days Gower is renowned as a very able commentator and pundit, but my client grew up in the 1980s when he was England’s successful and debonair captain.

Anyway, my client, whom I’ll call Stephen, was going to have to go to a number of functions connected with his job and he was worried about how he was going to cope. He was a shy man and very lacking in confidence when it came to chatting to people, especially women.

We talked about how he could cope better, and about how sometimes a bit of play-acting can work wonders. As a result, he went along pretending, in his head, to be David Gower. This helped him enormously.

So, can you think of someone you’d like to emulate? If you’re stressed, make it someone calm. If you’re nervous, make it someone confident. If you’re a quiet, unsmiling person, try to imagine yourself as someone you admire who always looks pleasant and approachable.

You’re not asking yourself to look like, or to pretend to be, this other person. You’re just using some characteristics that you admire. And maybe before long, some of these characteristics might become your own.
